January Commodity Outlook

The climax of the second season started mid-January. The variation in the rainfall distribution countrywide corresponded with the production levels in the usual production locations where surplus crop production was reported in areas that received above to normal rainfall and less yield in areas that registered reduced volumes of rain especially in eastern Uganda. Less maize yield was realized in the eastern region especially Busoga where farmers substituted maize for sugarcane due to the input support such as fertilizer and seed and the current sugarcane market price influence. The sugarcane demand from several factories countrywide has also facilitated the shift.…

High grain market prices were recorded during the month of November in several district markets countrywide. The climax of the off-season period marking the end of the first season was reported at the opening of this month. August Commodity Outlook

Slow trading was reported at the regional border trade hub of Busia in the opening week of August. There was very low demand for maize grain at the border post market as Kenya continues to harvest some maize in the western region around Kitale which apparently coincides with the Ugandan harvest in Kapchorwa. This supply could continue reaching the market until end of September. Only less than 50Mt of grain was reported crossing daily from the produce market to Kenya formally and an equivalent 50Mt estimated daily via trade routes through the porous border. Good quality maize was offered at…

Tanzania was similarly pushing its maize grain to Kenya via Taveta, Namanga and Sirari border posts during the month of May towards June, however, as their season winded up, their grain price increased giving…
